LA RECOMENDACIÓN DE GUADALUPE MARISCAL

Restaurante
PUBLIC

What would you put up with for the best value for money in your city?

Once upon a time, a couple made up by a Catalonian woman and a Philippine man decided to set up a restaurant in Gerona called Vostra Llar. They got a marvellous blend of creative Mediterranean cuisine, garnished with colonial decoration and rather reasonable prizes. Little by little, they got more and more success, what made them set up more restaurants in Barcelona, Gerona and Madrid, but always keeping the originality in their dishes and the cosy atmosphere.

Their most intimate and less known restaurant (but maybe the most charming because of that) is Public, hidden in a little street in the heart of Madrid. It owns the most exquisite Mediterranean cuisine in the purest New Yorker style. When you go into it, its bright modern decor takes you to the Philippe Starck-designed hotels, such us Hudson or Royal in New York.

Regarding the menu, Public has a wide range of dishes like goat cheese with caramelized baby onions and pepper marmalade, grilled prawns with salt and pepper, wild mushroom Risotto and duck liver chips… and original deserts, such as “The desert you eat from the bottom to the top”, or Banana tart Tatin. But the most awesome are the prices of this quality cuisine: between 6 and 10 € per course, and between 3 and 5 € the deserts. Lower is the set menu price, which is about only 10 €!

With respect to the service, it is smart and efficient, but unfortunately, it is much better during the week. This is because of its greatest negative detail, there is no booking, so there are queues soon gathered. Due to this, it is strongly recommended to go before the usual lunchtime so that you can put your name down on a waiting list. And here comes the dilemma of whether it is worth waiting or not, and if you could put up with the noise surrounding you when eating. My friends and I considered it the first time we went, and we decided to wait drinking some beers in the next door bars and we had a ball there and also one hour later in Public. For that reason, every time we come back there, we do the same traditional round.

Going back to the previous question: Is it worth it? Obviously, this is a personal choice, but for me, it is. And what about you? Dare you eat in a place where everything costs what it is worth?
